Film Screening: Friday Oct 17, 7pm Closing Reception: Friday Nov 7, 6-9pm at Fourteenfifteen Gallery & Alpaca Since 1995, Bryan Konefsky has supported moving image artists from around the world through his work with Basement Films and his Experiments in Cinema film festival. This exhibit marks the first major survey of Konefsky’s own creative work in New Mexico. The gallery exhibit will consist of paintings, conceptual work, performance and moving image installations. Konefsky’s work explores issues such as identity, community and place, political corruption and urban decay, notions of masculinity – from the personal to widening circles of the political. |
Bryan Konefsky is a cultural worker dedicated to the advancement of undependent, experimental media arts through his work as a moving image artist, teacher, lecturer and film festival director.
From 1995–2020, he taught moving image production and critical studies through the Department of Cinematic Arts at the University of New Mexico, where he was honored in 2009 with a university-wide Teacher of the Year award. Konefsky was an invited lecturer in the Department of Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz from 2003–2018. Presently, he lectures at Dongguk University in South Korea.
Konefsky is the founder and director of Experiments in Cinema, an annual international film festival in Albuquerque that showcases cinematic experimentation from around the world. Additionally, he is the president of Basement Films, one of the few remaining first generation micro cinemas in the United States. He served as a panelist for the New Mexico Film Office’s New Visions filmmaking awards and The National Endowment for the Arts. Konefsky is a member of the board of advisors for the Ann Arbor Film Festival (the oldest experimental festival in the United States) and has been a guest curator for the Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and an experimental film judge for Videofest sponsored by the Dallas Video Association in Texas. bryankonefsky.com

Since 1995, Bryan Konefsky has supported moving image artists from around the world through his work with Basement Films and his Experiments in Cinema film festival. This screening marks a rare public appearance and unique opportunity for New Mexicans to experience Konefsky's wry sense of storytelling combined with his sharp critique of the art world and the wild and wooly world of academia-land. Konefsky's work explores issues such as identity, community and place, political corruption and urban decay, notions of masculinity - from the personal to widening circles of the political.
Konefsky's creative work has been showcased at museums and film festivals in countries such as Argentina, Cuba, Germany, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Spain and the UK. This screening is being presented in conjunction with a retrospective of Konefsky's creative work at 1415 Gallery located in the same complex as Alpaca.
